How do I qualify for a DPS Officer?
Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of appointment.
To qualify for a DPS Officer Cadet:
- Twenty-one (21) years of age or older and graduation from high school or equivalent education.

The Department of Public Safety has a moral and ethical obligation to select only the most qualified applicants for our law enforcement positions. Background investigations ensure that we select only those individuals of impeccable moral character and uncompromising integrity. DISQUALIFIERS INCLUDE:
- Conviction of a felony in the State of Nevada or a conviction in another state which would be a felony if committed in this State
- Conviction of any offense involving illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances
- Conviction of D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime
- Documented history of physical violence.
- Any illegal use of controlled substance within the listed time limits preceding the date of application: A: Marijuana - Up to date of application. B: All others, including hallucinogens or experimental drugs, and steroid use - 3 years. This is to include prescribed medication not prescribed to the candidate schedule I, and II.
- Intentional falsification, deception or omission of information during the application and background investigation process
- You must be able to obtain a valid Nevada Class C driver's license and must have the ability to obtain both a radio operator's certificate and a radar operator's certificate.

Critical Fill Candidates: If you have recently retired from a Nevada law enforcement agency and want to continue serving and protecting Nevada while supplementing your retirement, join the Nevada State Police as a Critical Fill hire. Your current retirement benefits will not be affected, and you can work up to 40 hours a week or more with overtime.
Lateral Candidates: To qualify you must be Certified as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and have one year of law enforcement experience as a Category I Peace Officer; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service.

Recruitment Timeline
Expect the entire hiring process, from the date of your written and/or physical agility test to Academy appointment, to last a minimum of 5-6 months. This is a general timeline and individual cases may vary considerably depending on the time frame of the next academy.

11.5" vertical jump
24 sit-ups in 1 minute or less
18 push-ups, no time limit
300 meter run in 82 seconds or less
1.5 Mile run in 20:20 or less
Agility run in 23.4 seconds

What to expect in the Nevada State Police Academy
Nevada State Police Academy Sergeant Bake explains the importance of training to prepare cadets for a career in law enforcement.
Pickup Day is the first day new cadets are introduced to the Nevada State Police Academy and Training Division Command.
EVOC Emergency Vehicle Operation Course with the Nevada State Police is one of the most challenging and also one of the most enjoyable courses in the Academy. Cadets with Academy 100 completed this weeklong training to become proficient in safely handling emergency vehicles to provide the highest level of public safety services on Nevada’s roadways.
Range week Academy 100. Cadets undergo a 40-hour class followed by rifle and shotgun class and ongoing training and qualifications throughout their career.
Cadets with the Nevada State Police, Academy 100, conducted a Hero Workout in honor and remembrance of Trooper Gary Gifford, who lost his life in the line of duty on October 14, 1975.
Following tradition, the cadets of Academy 96 ran from the Carson City Academy to the State Capitol Law Enforcement Memorial in honor and remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving and protecting Nevada. These eight cadets will graduate today and join the Nevada State Police family as Highway Patrol Troopers and Parole and Probation Officers.
