What is a Correctional Officer?

Under supervision as a sworn law enforcement peace officer, to provide the public, staff, and offenders protection by enforcing State and Federal laws and administrative regulations while supervising the conduct of offenders of a State correctional facility or camp; and to do other related work.

Minimum Qualifications for a Correctional Officer

Citizenship

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

Age & Education

  • Be at least 21 years of age when hired.

  • Be a high school graduate or its equivalent (G.E.D. under Nevada Educational Standards).

Criminal History

  • Must have not been convicted of, or placed on deferred adjudication for any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence.

  • Must be of good moral character as determined by the Department and by the State of Nevada regulatory guidelines.

Employment History

  • 2 years of full time or equivalent work history.

  • Work history can be part time or full-time work, military or college experience after high school graduation.

Correctional Officer Hiring Timeline

  • Application 

    You just submitted your application! 

     
  • Recruiter Review 

    A recruiter will review your application for education and experience.

     
  • Deemed Eligible 

    If you are deemed eligible, you will begin your testing process.

     
  • Physical Fitness Testing 

    You will be scheduled for your physical fitness test as part of the first round of testing.

     
  • Testing 

    After you pass your physical fitness test, you will then be invited to complete your next round of testing. This will include:

    • Personal History Questionnaire/Fingerprinting
    • Background Investigation/Clarification Interview 
    • Psychological Evaluation 
    • Medical Examination
     
  • Interview 

    After passing the testing process, you will be brought in for an interview.

     
  • Offer 

    If you pass all phases of testing and the interview, you will receive an offer. Congrats!

The Nevada Department of Corrections has opportunities with the Critical Rehire Program.

This opportunity is available in most of the Correctional Facilities across the State.

If you have recently retired from a Nevada law enforcement agency and want to continue serving and protecting Nevada while supplementing your retirement, you may be eligible for the Critical Rehire Program. Your current retirement benefits will not be affected, and you can work up to 40 hours a week or more with overtime.

  • Southern Desert State Prison
  • Northern Nevada Correctional Center

Qualifications for the Critical Rehire program are as follows:

Certification as a Category 3 Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in an adult and/or juvenile correctional institution; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above, to include Certification as a Category 3 Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy. Note: If you don't have an active POST certification, recertification through our 10-week academy is required.
